5 Ways to Find Your Partner's Ring Size

It can be tricky to find out your partner's ring size without giving away your plan to propose

Buying the correct size of engagement is important to ensure your partner can proudly wear the ring comfortably and securely while celebrating your engagement. It's normal to not know your partner's ring size, but it can be tricky to find out your partner's ring size without giving away your plan to propose.  You don't want to ruin the surprise though, do you? To help out, we have 5 tips to help you find your partners ring size, however if you want to play it safe we also stock an adjustable sized ring.

Adjustable size proposal ring

We stock the 2 most common ring sizes in the UK, alongside our adjustable size engagement ring. Here are some practical ways to figure out your partner's right size so you can make the best choice:

1. Borrow a Ring They Already Own

  • If your partner wears a ring on their ring finger (the finger next to their little finger on their left hand), you could borrow it and have it measured at a jeweller or using a ring sizer.

  • Ring sizers are very affordable and are available to buy online here.

  • If you’re measuring a ring they wear on the correct finger but opposite hand, remember that the dominant hand can sometimes have slightly larger fingers so factor that in to your decision.

2. Estimate Based on Average Sizes

  • If you can’t measure accurately, you could take an educated guess. The average ring size for women is 6 to 7 (US sizes) or L to N (UK sizes), which equates to around 16.5mm - 17.3mm in diameter.

  • For this reason, the two fixed sized rings we stock are a US size 6 which is a UK size L, and a US size 7 which is a UK size N.

3. Measure Their Finger

  • This is the most fool proof method, but is also the most obvious so you would need to be quite crafty as to not give the game away.

  • Use a string or a strip of paper to wrap around their finger and mark where it overlaps. You can then measure the length of the string/paper in millimetres and compare it to a ring size chart. You will need to get creative to not raise suspicion.

4. Ask Friends or Family

  • Ask a close friend or family member who you trust to keep your secret, they might just know the right size.

  • If they don't already know the right size, they may find an opportunity to casually ask about ring sizes in conversation.

5. Choose a Resizable or Adjustable Ring

  • We stock an adjustable sized ring for those of you that can’t confidently establish the correct size and don’t want to take the risk of it not fitting.

  • This allows you to confidently propose with a placeholder ring and have your partner sized for the final piece later.
